When the Nursing and Midwifery Council announced that nurses revalidation would be introduced across the whole nursing profession from April 2016, Nursing Times turned to Learning Pool and Totara for a technology solution that would help their users keep their registration up to date with the regulator.

The Challenge
Read by over 25,000 nursed and midwives, Nursing Times gives access to more than 5,000 articles for clinical updates, research evidence and information that supports service developments and improves their practice.Discover how Totara Learn and Adapt helped streamline processes and improve learner record keeping. To stay on the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register, all nurses and midwives are required to renew their registration every three years, keeping up-to-date with practice and professional development and reflecting on the professional standards of practice and behaviour set out in the Code.Nurses and midwives are required to do 450 practice hours, 35 hours of CPD, 5 pieces of practice related feedback and at least 5 pieces of written reflection. Managers are responsible for confirming their nurses have fulfilled these requirements
The solutio
Nursing Times decided they could do something to make this process easier, so they turned to Learning Pool and Totara Learn for help in creating a technology solution that would help nurses and midwives keep their registration up-to-date with the NMC’s regulations.
“Learning Pool provided us with an online learning passport that enabled us to keep track of Revalidation activities and CPD completed by nurses and maintain a reliable record of all their learning and professional practice.”
In preparation for this new process, Nursing Times Learning was launched in August 2015. This learning management system uses Totara Learn and Adapt content to provide nurses and midwives with a high-quality suite of online learning, written by national experts. The learning covers all aspects of care from clinical record keeping to end of life care. This online training platform allows managers to keep a record of all the Revalidation activities and CPD completed by learners so that they can be easily reported on. They will have easy access to a visual dashboard so that they can plan and take action when they need it.
The impact and results
Thousands of nurses have already recorded their CPD using NT Learning, with positive feedback and many users reporting on how efficient the service is, saving a lot of time. A representative from University Hospitals of North Midlands said:
“For us, having access to the learning, clinical articles and the Manager Dashboard works very well together as an ‘all-in-one’ system. It was timely for us to implement a solution that will benefit staff and help build confidence.
