Grupo Financiero Banorte is a company with a presence throughout Mexico, providing financial services to over 8,000,000 unique users nationwide. Across its various business lines, Banorte facilitates the lives of both individual and corporate clients, supporting them in all their financial needs to achieve their personal and business goals.
The global COVID-19 pandemic led to significant digital growth for Banorte, driven by the increased use of mobile banking. In response, the financial group aimed to further increase the adoption of digital banking by its customers and provide tailored solutions to meet the needs of their different market segments.
The Challenge
As a first step toward achieving their business goals, Banorte set out to upskill and reskill the abilities of its +7,500 employees. To accomplish this, they acquired subscriptions from five different e-learning content providers: Udemy, Crehana, Get Abstract, Coursera, and Pluralsight. While this acquisition granted their collaborators access to a robust content catalog, its implementation presented operational complexity that discouraged employee engagement, failed to foster a culture of self-learning, and hindered the creation of personalized learning experiences by the Learning & Development teams.
From the user perspective, the main challenge of this system was the absence of a single location to access the entire course catalog and the lack of individually tailored learning paths. Instead, users had to log in separately to each of the five providers, keep track of multiple passwords and have their learning records spread out in different platforms.
On the other hand, Banorte’s Learning & Development team struggled with the absence of a centralized report showing user progress across the different platforms.
The Solution
Grupo Financiero Banorte partnered with Kineo to create Apprende, a platform built using the Engage and Learn modules of Totara. The goal was to provide users with a single point of access to content from various providers, segmented by topics and recommendations. This allowed users to select content based on prior assignments or personal interests, fostering a personalized learning experience (LXP) that encourages a culture of self-learning and drives the achievement of learning objectives.
Kineo developed a sophisticated custom solution that utilizes the APIs of five major content providers content (Udemy, Coursera, Crehana, Pluralsight and GetAbstract).
The solution imports all courses and additional data (title, description, tags, categories, and other metadata) and shows them as course Totara Catalog, transforming Totara into a robust content hub of more than 56,000 courses in all possible topics, languages and levels.
When a learner clicks on a course, Totara – working as an identity provider- logs the user seamlessly using SSO into the selected vendor/content. Once the course is completed, status data is also imported to Totara database keeping a single source of truth across all platforms. These processes run periodically to keep both catalog and completion data up to date.
A key aspect of improving the user experience was simplifying content access. To achieve this, Kineo also developed a Single Sign-on system with Microsoft Azure, to connect not only to the Apprende platform but also to Udemy, Crehana, Get Abstract, Coursera, and Pluralsight.
As a result, Apprende (Totara Learn + Engage) is now part of Banorte’s ecosystem of learning, creating a natural and frictionless experience for learners.
The Result
As a result of the Totara Learn and Engage implementation, more than 14,300 users gained access to a centralized catalog containing over 56,000 courses and programs. This easy-to-navigate platform enabled the L&D team to incentivize user engagement, leading to proactive enrollment in over 77,000 new courses during the past 12 months.
For Banorte’s L&D team, this marks a significant achievement, saving considerable time. They can now review the progress of their collaborators in one place and evaluate which learning providers are driving more engagement and results for their team. Notably, more than 30% of course enrollments come from one specific provider.
Apprende enables the possibility of making specialized paths according to the most popular contents or direct the development of certain skills, thus increasingly personalizing the offer of contents. The measurement of this and other additional strategies will allow us to identify the impact on results and the solidification of a culture of self-development that leads employees to continuously transform themselves and consequently contribute in a different way to achieving in a different way to the achievement of business results
