Komatsu Chile implements learning model

Komatsu, a global leader in manufacturing, selling, distributing, leasing, and after-sales services for machinery and technological solutions for markets such as mining, construction, forestry, and industry, has implemented a cutting-edge Learning Management System (LMS) to improve the skills of its workforce. With its main focus in Chile on mining, Komatsu Chile and its Training Center (CFK) have adopted an innovative training methodology in the market through the use of Totara Learn and Totara Perform.

The Challenge

Komatsu Chile faced the challenge of establishing itself as a leader in the training of people who provide service and support to Komatsu teams. To achieve this goal, the company implemented the CFK Corporate Academy, through the LXP Totara Engage, which allowed quality management and the expansion of the training offer. The functional competencies model integrated courses, programs and learning experiences in a development path that allowed continuous training with the people who work at Komatsu and the attraction of talented graduates from professional technical education. As a result, the Komatsu Training Center has improved the skills of the people who provide support and service to Komatsu equipment, establishing itself as a leader in training in this field.

The Solution

Digital Learning, a Totara partner, faced the challenge of implementing a competency model for Komatsu that could handle large numbers of collaborators quickly and easily. Digital Learning combined the Totara Learn module, Totara Perform module, and payroll management was implemented through audiences. In addition, specific reports were defined to facilitate obtaining information on the competency framework of the students.Digital Learning linked 168 courses to a total of 407 competencies that covered all the technical profiles that Komatsu required. The technical complexity of the training given by Komatsu made it necessary to establish dates during its fiscal year to ensure that the training was carried out by the largest possible number of collaborators. The implementation of this competency model allowed the creation of a career plan for Komatsu technicians and, therefore, had a direct impact on their remuneration.

Results

Thanks to this training strategy focused on e-learning technology and the use of an LMS, Komatsu has been able to significantly improve the performance and competence of its technical and non-technical personnel, which has translated into increased productivity and efficiency at the workplace. The use of Totara’s LMS has allowed Komatsu to provide more personalised training that is adaptable to the individual needs of each employee, resulting in greater job satisfaction and commitment. In addition, the traceability of training processes has been key and the development of digital skills, especially for a staff that is mostly millennial, is now possible thanks to an LMS like Totara. In one business year, Komatsu has managed to train a total of 3,528 people, which is equivalent to 41% of its work plant. This shows the effectiveness of implementing an LMS in a large company like Komatsu, as it allows for the efficient management of large numbers of collaborators while ensuring a high-quality training experience.Komatsu has been able to consolidate itself as a leader in training through the implementation of a powerful and flexible Learning Management System that met their business objectives – Totara. The use of e-learning technology has allowed the company to significantly improve the quality of the training provided to its staff, both in terms of content and accessibility.
